asterisk instead of normal phones

So, then I'll try to start to get the first few folks into a discussion here...
I'm wondering if someone here is using Asterisk or any other PBX as phone system on their base, ministry, or even for their personal phone lines. Actually, I don't even know if there is another OpenSource PBX besides Asterisk. But that isn't so much my issue at the moment, anyways. Many times ideas, like this one, are born out of a mix of I'm annoyed about something for whatever reason, I want to learn something new, I have that awesome sweet idea (that at the end often isn't possible or way too complicated), I'm curious about something, and sometimes maybe because I'm a little bored (yes, that can happen, even if it sounds impossible being bored and being in YWAM).

Anyways. So, I thought: Why not having an Asterisk system at home, for personal use... I have that server sitting there under the desk which would be more than capable to handle the phone calls for the 2 of us.
Also I could use the computer to make phone calls, not for the sake of using a computer but rather being able to use a headset and having the hands free while being on the phone. That's something I really like about making calls with Skype. However, I don't like Skype really too much for a variety of reasons.

Now here it comes...
I was wondering about if it's possible to make conference calls, video calls (with other Asterisk users or even other systems?) and even video conference calls. Can I send and receive a Fax on the computer. I read that it's possible to connect multiple Asterisk systems and being able to call from one city to another just via a phone extension number, does that mean I can make calls for free between Asterisk systems? Can I give other people access from outside my network or can I access the system from outside (e.g. via VPN) and make calls while not at home? How about the provider, do I have to choose one that is in the country the server is in and can I connect to different providers with the same Asterisk setup (e.g. a Base which makes a lot of calls over seas, could be worth considering to reduce cost)? How do I find providers in the first place?
Another big thing would be system integration. Can I share a address book for email, Asterisk, etc. Sharing that across the network with different computers and OS's.

Is it even worth thinking about it for personal use?

So much to think about. But I actually would like to play around with that. Could be fun. Just let me know if you use something like that or have any input on this one.
Maybe, if it works to connect between similar systems to call for free we might have a YWAMIT phone conference one day and no one has to pay a thing... OK, at least I can dream, ey?

Blessings,
Steve
