TabletPC vs. Laptop

Tablets are all over the place. More and more apps are developed and the existing ones getting better and better. There are tablets (and phones) with dual core processors available. The platform and raw numbers might not be directly comparable to those of desktop processors. Still, we can see quite some process. It's almost everything one needs on the go.
The question come to mind, do we actually still need a laptop? I think, it's a question worth thinking about. Of course, a tablet can not replace all computing needs. But what is it, we need on the go?

Google+

After not having used Facebook, let alone any of the earlier expressions of social networking like MySpace, I thought I'll have a look at Google+. So far so good. What can I say, it works. Whether it's good or not so good I cannot tell, since I have nothing to compare it to, besides maybe having looked over the shoulders of those using Facebook.
Who here is using it, what do you think about it? How does it compare to other social platforms? What do you think is missing?

The future of Skype

About a week ago the FTC (US Federal Trade Commission) has approved for Microsoft to take over Skype. Depending on who you ask, this is either good or bad news. Skype might be available on service where, so far, it's not. Integrated in some Microsoft software, most likely it will work very well with these. Also, added service to XBox will attract some people towards the platform.

maintaining online and network security

What can we learn from the recent attacks that target big companies like Sony, IMF, Google, Governments, etc. Has that any impact for YWAM, missions, or Christianity in general?
Of course, we could say that these companies, agencies, and even individuals that got attacked are all high-profile targets for cyber criminals. Of what internest could YWAM really be, let alone an email account of someone of a Base Leadership Team somewhere in the world?

Setting up a Base network

What is the "perfect" network layout for a YWAM Base? Well, I guess we all agree that there is no such thing as a "perfect" set-up. I believe, however, that we all had those moments when we thought this or that is/would be "perfect". On the the other hand most, if not all, of us probably had more then enough of those "oh-no-this-is-useless" moments. Recently I set out on the quest to find out what these "oh-noes" (in the context of a YWAM Base) are and what can be done to avoid them.

asterisk instead of normal phones

So, then I'll try to start to get the first few folks into a discussion here...
I'm wondering if someone here is using Asterisk or any other PBX as phone system on their base, ministry, or even for their personal phone lines. Actually, I don't even know if there is another OpenSource PBX besides Asterisk. But that isn't so much my issue at the moment, anyways. Many times ideas, like this one, are born out of a mix of I'm annoyed about something for whatever reason, I want to learn something new, I have that awesome sweet idea (that at the end often isn't possible or way too complicated), I'm curious about something, and sometimes maybe because I'm a little bored (yes, that can happen, even if it sounds impossible being bored and being in YWAM).
